Bonus Feature - Side Characters
In a bonus feature for Negatives, I went into the creation and evolution of the main characters: Jane, Glenn, Aster, and Cyrus. Here I’ll talk a little bit about some of the secondary characters.
In a bonus feature for Negatives, I went into the creation and evolution of the main characters: Jane, Glenn, Aster, and Cyrus. Here I’ll talk a little bit about some of the secondary characters, including Black Blood Moon.
Kyra: Jane’s roommate, a pretty easygoing studio art student who is frequently at her boyfriend’s instead of in their shared room. She’s a vegan and keeps encouraging Jane to take better care of herself and her diet. Initially I’d included some stuff in the story about Jane gaining the “freshman 15” and stressing about that, but I figured it seemed a little shallow to focus on and took away from the other stuff she has more reason to be stressing about.
Megan: I wanted Jane to have a best friend so she wouldn’t just automatically be the loner who gets drawn in by Aster’s charisma. This is also a little influenced by the series’ previous life as an anti-fan-fic of Twilight, since Bella does have friends but they kind of fall by the wayside in favor of Edward. Jane’s interest in the Diegos does drive a bit of a wedge between her and Megan, but Megan’s tendency to disappear into her boyfriend of the moment does make it easier for that wedge to get in there. Megan is based on a few people I’ve known in my life: stubborn, opinionated, mouthy but very loyal women who will stand up for themselves and their friends but seem to have a blind spot when it comes to partners. I’ve known too many women who take no shit but let a guy treat them like shit.
Megan has a somewhat antagonistic love/hate relationship with Nestor, whose boorish behavior turned her off back in Negatives. She is heavily physically attracted to him even so, which pisses her off and causes her to treat him more harshly than she otherwise would.
